Formation Flying Rating

This course is approximately 8 hours of flying time and looks at everything you need to fly safely and accurately in formation with another aircraft.

Formation flying is not a part time afair at Airborne Aviation - our highly experienced instructors conduct numerous formation exercises each and every week as part of our Joy Flight business in addition to flying training.

Course Outline

Formation flying exercises are conducted over 8 lessons covering all aspects of formation flight:

  • Pre-flight briefings
  • Radio phraseologies
  • Hand signals
  • Airmanship
  • Start-up and taxi
  • Takeoff and Landing
  • Leader responsibilities
  • Wingman responsibilities
  • Keeping station
  • Formation positions
  • Manoevres while in formation
  • Break / rejoin
  • Leader changes
  • Emergencies
  • CAR 163AA requirements

Training is typically conducted using our current generation Cessna 172 aircraft. If you'd like to use any of our other aircraft like the Tiger Moths, or perhaps your own aircraft - contact us so we can confirm suitability and provide you with an estimate.

Below is an estimate based on pricing current at 1st May 2018 and includes all the training a typical trainee requires to meet the required standard.

This formation flying courses requires two trainees. If you do not have a partner organised for the course please contact us and we will endeavour to find another trainee for your course.
